Develops Transparent Touch Panel with Curved Surface and Support for Large Sizes

 

Shin-Etsu Polymer Co., Ltd., (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Hiroshi Akazawa; Paid-in Capital: 11.6 billion yen, TSE 1st Section: 7970; “Shin-Etsu Polymer”) is pleased to announce that it has developed a transparent conductor film using silver nanowire ink (*1). The new film supports curved surfaces and is ideal for large panel sizes (15 inches), areas where ITO touch panels are considered deficient.The transparent conductor film features a light transmittance of 91%, surface resistivity of 80 Ω/□ and 1% haze, indicating superior operability and transparency even on large panels. Based on a calculation of 10 inches per film, Shin-Etsu Polymer is gearing up capacity to produce 100,000 films per month by April this year.

The technology is a fusion of the silver nanowire ink technology developed by the US-based electronics materials venture Cambrios Technologies Corp. (Headquarters: California, USA; President: John LeMoncheck) and the touch panel filming technologies developed by Shin-Etsu Polymer. The film boasts superior resistance values, flexibility, and transparency compared with the current mainstream touch panels that use ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) as an electrode material, and has also exhibited durability and reliability.

When launching its touch panel business, Shin-Etsu Polymer engaged in joint development with Hansung Elcomtec Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea; Chairman: Wan-Soo Han; “Hansung Elcomtec”) which had a track record in consigned production in the key switch business, and decided on an across-the-board business alliance on the production and sales fronts. Hansung Elcomtec has already started up a new plant and commenced the production of reinforced cover glass for touch panels. The new plant is outfitted with integrated equipment that spans processes from film processing to glass manufacturing and touch panel module assembly, and aims to quickly achieve market penetration through efforts at quality control and shortened production lead times.

In addition to key switches, Shin-Etsu Polymer already produces capacitive touch switches for in-car use (using the SEPLEGYDA® organic conductive polymer developed in-house) and PC touch pads, and is actively expanding its input device business in tandem with touch panels.
